La isla sur…Acojonante (escrito/written 28/09/13)

Os escribo desde Rotorua, en el centro de la isla norte. Esta semana cruzamos el estrecho de Cook hacia la isla norte, y hemos visto Wellington, Napier, toda la zona del cabo Este y la bahía de Plenty.
I’m writing from Rotorua, center of the north island. This week we crossed Cook strait towards north island, and we’ve seen Wellington, Napier, all East Cape area and Bay of Plenty.
La zona del estrecho es muy bonita de ver desde el ferry, sobretodo la parte sur, porque recorres el fiordo Queen Charlotte, muy estrecho, y es curioso como va girando el ferry. Wellington no está mal, es la capital, o sea un poco más pija, pero aun así puedes ver el parlamento, el museo de Nueva Zelanda/Te Papa y unas vistas sobre la bahía espectaculares desde el monte Victoria. Eso si, hace un viento brutal. Napier está en la costa este, y es curiosa porque después de sufrir un terremoto hace 70 años diseñaron el centro rollo art deco. Lo mas bonito fue el cabo Este, el primer sitio en el planeta donde amanece y la bahía de Plenty. Playas espectaculares en medio de riscos y naturaleza. De lo más bonito que hemos visto en Nueva Zelanda. Y unas cascadas donde el agua caía fortísimo, y de las gotas en suspensión se formaba un arcoiris. Increible.
Cook strait area is really nice to see from the ferry, most the southern part, because we should cross Queen Charlotte fiord, really narrow, nd it’s curious to see how it turns the boat to go out. Wellington it’s not so bad, it’s the capital, so little bit more posh, but it’s nice to see the Parliament, NZ/Te Papa museum and the espectacular views of the bay from Mount Victoria. On the other hand, really windy. Napier it’s on east coast, and is curious because after an earthquake that suffered 70 years ago the center was designed in art deco. The most beautiful thing was East Cape, first place all over the world where you can see the sunrise and Bay of Plenty. Espectacular beaches in the middle of cliffs and nature. One of the most beautiful areas we’ve seen in NZ. And a waterfall where the water was falling really strong, and with the suspended drips you see a rainbow. Amazing.
O sea que ya hemos acabado la isla sur. Nos ha parecido espectacular. Sobretodo la naturaleza. Para las dimensiones que tiene, 1000 km de largo por entre 200 y 300 km de ancho, es increible la variedad que hay de paisajes, desde llanos imensas, montañas nevadas altisimas, glaciares, bosques semitropicales, playas en medio de la naturaleza, riscos brutales y todo tipo de paisajes que no dabas abasto con la cámara de fotos. Encima todo muy bien organizado, con puntos de información por todos lados, los hitos turísticos marcados en las carreteras y sendas muy bien señalizadas para caminar. A nivel de naturaleza no había visto tantas cosas espectaculares juntas en ningún sitio de los que he estado.
So we finished south island. We think was spectacular. And the highlight is the nature. For the island dimensions, 1000 km long between 200-300 km wide, it’s amazing the variation of landscapes, because it’s possible to find immense flats, really high snowed mountains, glaziers, subtropical rainforests, beaches in the middle of the nature, incredible cliffs and all kind of landscapes that made to take pictures a heavy work. All is really well organized, with lots of information sites everywhere, touristic highlights indicated on the roads and really good signals at the walking paths. Talking about nature, I hadn’t seen as much spectacular things together anywhere I’ve been.

P.D. En uno de los post anteriores puse que el kg de tomates iba a 7 euros. Ya sabemos por que. Es caro ahora porque está fuera de temporada, e importarlo es carisimo, básicamente porque esto está a tomar por el culo de todos los lados. Eso si, ellos siguen comprándolo. No me extraña, un sueldo medio aqui, y cuando digo medio es no de los mas altos, esta entre 2000-2500 euros.
P.S. In one of the previous posts I put that kg of tomatoes was 7 euro. Now we know why. It’s expensive because it’s out of season, and import it it’s really expensive, basically because NZ is far away all over the places. Although, the keep on buying it. It’s not strange, because an average salary here, and when I say average means not the higher ones, is between 2000-2500 euros.

Os escribo desde Nelson, al norte de la isla sur. Esta semana estuvimos en la parte oeste de la isla, desde los glacares hasta Westport, en el parque nacional Abel Tasman, en Golden Bay, en Nelson y en Malbororough.
I’m writing you from Nelson, northern part of the south island. This week we were in the western part of the island, from the glaziers to Westport, in Abel Tasman national park, Golden Bay, Nelson and Malborough.
La parte oeste de la isla es una franja estrecha delimitada por el mar y las montañas, con vegetación semitropical, muy poco poblada, con playas solitarias, chula de ver si vas de pasada. Goden Bay es una bahía inmensa en la punta noroeste de la isla, muy chulo, y tiene un manantial con el agua más clara que he visto en mi puta vida (leimos que era a tercera más clara del mundo, con una visibilidad bajo el agua de 65 metros), Nelson es una ciudad tranquila y que no esta mal, en la que hemos parado porqye queriamos descansar un dia y Malborough es una region de vinos cerca del mar donde fuimos a visitar 3 bodegas para catar vinos. El blanco no esta mal pero el tinto es malo de cojones.
Western part of the island is a flat and narrow area between the mountains and Tasman Sea, with subtropical vegetation, with nit so much population, lonely beaches, and nice to see while you’re driving. Golden Bay is a big bay at the northeast point of the island, nice to see, and there’s a spring with the cearest and purest water I’ve ever seen in my fucking life (we read that was the third clearest all over the world, with a visibility of 65 metres under the water), Nelson it’s a quiet city that’s not bad, where we’ve stopped because we wanted to rest during one day and Malborough is a wine region near the sea where we visited 3 wineries to taste wines. White wine is not bad but red is really bad.
Lo realmente espectacular fue el parque nacional. Esta en la parte noroeste de la isla, y está formado por montañas con vegetación semitropical que van a morir al mar. Hay bahias con playas con aguas claras azules azules y arena de color ocre. Increible. De las playas más bonitas que he visto en mi vida. Caminamos 35 km por las montañas en dos dias, puesto que solo se puede llegar a las playas caminando o en barco, pero mereció la pena. Lástima no poder haberse bañado, no somos de Bilbao, pero casi mejor asi, porque teniams las playas prácticamente para nosotros. Ya sabeis que soy un friki, y cuanta menos gente hay en la playa mas me gusta.
What was really spectacular was the national park. It’s at the northeast of the island, and it has mountains with subtropical vegetation that end at the sea. There are bays with beaches, with clear and really blue water and intense yellow colour sand. Amazing. Some of the nicest beaches I’ve ever seen. We walked 35 km through the mountains two days, because it’s possibe to arrive only walking or by boat, but it was worth it. It was a pity that we couldn’t have a bath, but I think was better, because we had the beach almost only for us. I know I’m a litte bit weird, but less people there is at the beach more than I like it.
Parece ser que hay gente con curiosidad por saber como es la campervan en a que viajamos. Voy a tratar de explicarme. Es un monovolumen en realidad, de color verde y fucsia (son los colores de la empresa, canta como los mirlos, pero es lo que hay), donde los asientos de atras se hacen cama, eso si, tirando los asientos delanteros para adelante al maximo. Yo quepo justo. En el maletero hay como un mueble de plastico que contiene una pequeña nevera, que se alimenta de una segunda bateria que lleva incorporada el coche, y que se carga mientras conducimos, una pica con un grifo para lavar platos, una minuscula cocina que funciona con botes de gas, y un armario con puerta para los platos y la comida que no va en la nevera. No es la hostia, pero es barato. No nos podemos quejar.
It seems there are some peope who want to know how is the campervan where we are using to travel. I’ll try to explain it. Actually it’s like a wagon car, green and purple coloured (the colours of the company, it is not discrete but..), where you can make a bed in the backseats, putting the frontseats as far as possible. I fit tight. At the trunk there’s like a plastic structure, that contains a little fridge, feeded by a second battery of the car, that it is charged whie we’re driving, a sink with a tap to wash dishes, a miniscule kitchen which works with gas pots, and a cabinet with door for the dishes and all the food that’s not at the fridge. It’s not the greatest campervan of the world, but it’s cheap. We can’t complain.
Y tengo que decir que a pesar de la poca fe que la gente tiene en ello, la señorita Vyncke ya ha conducido, a pesar que era remisa, y por cierto muy bien. Que no es fácil adaptarse a conducir por la izquierda. De esta pierde el miedo a conducir por los restos.
And I must say that in spite of people didn’t have so much faith on it, miss Vyncke has driven too, despite she didn’t want at the beginning, and she drove really good knowing that’s not easy to adapt driving on the left. I think after this travel she’s going to lose forever her fear to drive.

P.D. Para variar me han puesto una multa de velocidad. Iba a 120 cuando aquí en las carreteras el máximo es 100. 70 euracos. Eso si, el policía supermajo. Si te han de joder, por lo menos que sea con una sonrisa.
P.S. Like often, I’ve got a fie from the NZ police because of speed excess. I drove 120 when here the limit it’s 100. 70 €. On the other hand, the policeman was really nice. If somebody is going to fuck you, better with a smile.

Semana de montañas (escrito/written 14/09/13)

Os escribo desde Franz Josef, en el oeste de la isla sur. Esta semana estuvimos en los Catlins, Queenstown, Wanaka, Monte Cook y los lagos y en los glaciares de la zona oeste de la isla.
I’m writing from Franz Josef, west part of southern island. This week we were at the Catlins, Queenstown, Wanaka, Mount Cook and lakes and at the glaziers of the western part f the southern island.
El recorrido ha estado marcado por las circunstancias. Despues de los Catlins, en la parte sur de la isla, nuestra idea era ir a ver el fiordo Milford, y después cruzar al oeste por el paso de Haast. Supongo que no conocereis la geografía de la isla sur de NZ, tambien llamados los Alpes del Sur, pero básicamente es una cadena de montañas de mas de 3000 metros en paralelo al mar, entre el centro y el oeste. Para cruzar, solo hay 3 o 4 pasos en 1000 km.
Our trip this week was affected by the circumstances. After Catlins, sothern part of the island, our idea was go to see Milford fiord, and after cross to the west through Haast pass. I suppose that you don’t know southern island geography, called southrrn Alps, but basically is a chain of mountains, most f them higher than 3000 metres, parallel to the sea, between the center and the wesr. To cross, there are only 3 or 4 passes in 1000 km.
Para ir al fiordo Milford, solo hay una carretera de 120 km que lleva al fiordo a traves de las montañas. El lunes llegamos a la cabecera de la carretera, y nos dijeron que ese dia estaba abierta, pero al siguiente la cortaban por riesgo de avalanchas. Como no queríamos quedarnos aislados en el camping del fiordo, decidimos ir a visitar Queenstown, y en un par de dias volver. Dos dias después, en Queenstown, nos dijeron que no la abririan en unos días mas. O sea que decidimos no ver el fiordo. Fuimos a Wanaka con idea de estar el dia allí y cruzar al oeste por el paso de Haast. Pero tambien estaba cortado por avalanchas. Nos dijeron que en un par de dias seguramente estaria abierto. Decidimos entonces ir mas al centro hacia el Monte Cook y los lagos Pukaki y Tekapo. El paso seguía cerrado. Finalmente hemos ido por el paso Arthur, dando una vuelta de 500 km. No mande a mis naves a luchar contra los elementos. C`est la vie.
To arrive Milford fiord, there’s only a road of 120 km through the mountains. Monday we arrived to the beginning of Milford road, and they told us that day was opened, but next were going to cut it because of avalanches risk. We didn’t want to take the rk f being isolated in the Milford camping, so we decided to visit Queenstown, and came back to Milford two days after. Two days after, in Queenstown, we knew that they weren’t going to open the road in some days. So we decided to skip the visit of the fiord. And we went to Wanaka with the idea of visit the area and the same day cross to the west through Haast pass. But was cut it too because of the avalanches. So we decided to go more to the center through Mount Cook and lakes Tekapo and Pukaki. The pass continued closed. Finally we’ve come through Arthur pass, giving a detour of 500 km. I didn’t send my Navy to fight against the elements (Translation of a Spanish saying, based in the disaster of the “Invincible Navy”, sent by king Phillip II to fight against English Navy in the 16th century, that almost didn’t arrive because of the weather conditions, and after defeated). C`est la vie.
Aunque no hay mal que por bien no venga. Nos ha permitido ver la zona de montañas, que casi no ibamos a visitar, y es increíble. Hay un monton de montañas, lagos y paisajes increíbles, con los picos nevados, aqui es invierno casi primavera, y con la zona de los lagos cerca del Monte Cook muy chula, puesto que los lagos son de color turquesa, debido a los sedimentos de los glaciares de las montañas. En la zona de los glaciares de Franz Josef y Cox, que es a otra falda del monte Cook, es curioso verlos a 15 km del mar y pegados a una zona de bosques brutales. Asi que creo que hemos ganado con el cambio.
On the other hand the situation allowed us to visit the mountais area, that we weren’t going to visit, and it’s incredible. There are a lot of mountais, lakes and incredible landscapes, with snowed summits, because here it’s winter near spring, and the area of Mount Cook lakes it’s amazing, because of the water of tge lakes is turquoise colour, because of the sediments of the mountain`s glaziers. At the area of Franz Josef and Cox glaziers, that’s the other side of Mount Cook, is curious to see them only 15 km far from the sea and near to rainforests areas. So I think we’ve won with the changes.
Otra cosa supercuriosa es los diferentes paisajes en as zonas de montañas. En las zonas este y sur antes de llegar a los Alpes es tido verde, bastante llano, sin apenas arboles, y llueve bastante menos que al oeste. Luego ves las montañas y el paisaje cada vez se transforma mas en lunar, con tierra marrón, arbustos bajos y casi sin arboles. Y cuando cruzas los Alpes, de repente te encuentras bosques supertupidos que llegan hasta el mar, y llueve bastante mas. Dicen que es porque lis Alpes paran las nubes en la zona oeste, por eso hay mas lluvia.
Another curious thing is the difference between the mountain areas. At the eastern and southern areas before arriving to the Alps the lascape is green, hilly or almost flat, with not so much trees, and it rains less than te western part. After you see mountains and the lanscape every time more transforms like a moon lanscape, with brown land, bushes and with almost any tree. And we you cross the Alps, suddenly you find rainforests that arrive to the sea, and rains much mre. It is said that is because the Alps stop the clouds at the western area, and because if that rains much more.

Y ya estamos en Nueva Zelanda (escrito/written 7/09/13)

Desde que llegamos a Nueva Zelanda, durante estos dias hems estado en Auckland, luego cogimos un avion para ir a Christchurch, en la isla sur, y de ahi hemos cogido una furgoneta/caravana donde hemos hecho la parte sureste de la isla, peninsula de Banks, costa de Canterbury y Otago, Dunedin y peninsula de Otago yت los Catlins.
Since we arrived to New Zealand, we’ve been some days in Auckland, after we took a plain to Christchurch, at the southern island, and from there we’ve rented a van/caravan where we’ve visited the southeastern part of the island, Banks peninsula, Otago and Canterbury coast, Dunedin and Otago peninsula and the Catlins.
Auckland es la ciudad mas grande de Nueva Zelanda, 1 millon sobre 4 en total que tiene el pais. Es una ciudad abierta al mar, y como todo lo que hemos visto por aqui hasta ahora con muchos espacios abiertos. Tiene algunas cosas interesantes, pero no es lo mas interesante de NZ.
Auckland is the biggest city of NZ, 1 million over 4 in total. It’s a city opened to the sea, and like all we’ve seen here till now with a lot of opened spaces. It has some interesting things to visit, but it isn’t the most interesting thing to visit in NZ.
Christchurch fue mas curioso. Hace un par de anyos sufrio un par de terremotos en los que murieron 185 personas y destrozaron la ciudad, sobretodo el centro. Es una pena, prque era la ciudad con mas historia, con un centro muy bonito por lo que dicen. Ahora el 80% de los edificios del centro son solares, y tardaran en reconstruirlo 20 anyos. Cuando caminas por el centro, por el dia parece el suenyo de una empresa de demoliciones y por a tarde parece una ciudad fantasma. Aun asi, han empezado en el centro por montar una especie de zona comercial en contenedores grandes, muy original la verdad, y tienen un museo de lo que ocurrio durante los terremotos superinteresante. Aun asi, ver la catedral abierta porque la torre se fue a tomar por el saco te deja mal sabor de boca.
Christchurch was more curious. A couple of years ago suffered an earthquake where 185 people died and the city was quite destroyed, more the center. It’s a pity, because was the city with more history, with a really cute downtown. Now 80% of the buildings of the center disappeared, and they’re going to need 20 years to rebuild it. If you’re at the center, during the day looks a like the dream of a demolition company, and during the evening it’s like a ghost town. Even though, the opened at the center kind a comercial area in big containers, really original, and they’ve got an earthquake museum really interesting. Even then, see the cathedral opened because of the tower felt down leaves a bad sensation.
De lo demas que hemos visitado, solo puedo decir que es la ostia. Los paisajes son increibles, tido verde, con una costa escarpada, playas con aguas turquesas, viendo pinguinos, lobos de mar, leones de mar, albatros, y sobretodo, ovejas pastando por todos lados. Imaginarios el Pais Vasco o las Highlands de Escocia, pero a lo bestia.
The rest that we’ve visited, i can only say that is unbelievable. The landscapes are amazing, all green, with a coast full of cliffs, beaches with blue water, we have seen pinguins, seals, sea lions, albatross, and all the time, sheeps eating all around. You should imagine the Basque Country or the Highlands in Scotland, but in a bigger dimension.
La gente de aqui son hipermajos. Te ayudan en todo lo que necesitas, son atentos y hablan contigo sin problema. Ya podriamos aprender en Espanya, donde a veces nos pierde la mala hostia! El nivel economico es muy alto, o sea que el pais es bastante caro, un poco mas que Espanya o Belgica seguro. Cenar en restaurante es carisimo, y la comida depende, la carne tira que te va, pero 1 kg de tomates naturales vale 7 euros. Ahora vas y lo cascas.
NZ people are really nice. They help us every time we needed, they’re friendly and they talked with s with any problem. Maybe in Spain we coud learn about they behaviour, because sometimes we’re a little bit rude! The life level is quite high, so the country is quite expensive, a little bit more than Spain or Belgium for sure. Having dinner in a restaurant is really expensive, and with the food depends, meat so so, but 1 kg of tomatoes costs 7 euros.
El pais esta lleno de espacios abiertos. Son 4 millones en una extension como la mitad de España mas o menos. Todos viven en casas con jardin, aqui los pareados no saben lo que son. Es una mezcla entre Reino Unido y USA, porque las casas son estilo victoriano muchas veces, pero las ciudades son estilo yanqui, el centro donde esan todos los comercios y el meneo, y el resto son inmensas urbanizaciones con casas, donde todo dios se mueve en coche. El ingles que hablan tambien parece britanico, pero de Escocia, sobretodo en la isla sur. O sea que para entenderlos es una movida.
The country is full of opened spaces. They’re 4 million in an area as half Spain more or less. All of them live in houses with garden. It’s a mix between UK and USA, because the houses are Victorian style, but the cities are American style, where all the activity and shops are in the downtown, nd the rest are immense suburbs with houses, and all the people use the car for transport. English they speak is British too, Scottish dialect, more in the southern island. So to understand them it’s difficult sometimes.

Como aqui en Nueva Zelanda casi no me he podido conectar a internet, porque cuesta un quintal, he ido escribiendo los posts en mi disco duro con la misma frecuencia que hasta ahora, o sea semanalmente. Y ahora los voy a colgar todos juntos. He preferido hacerlo asi porque sino despues de unas cuantas semanas no me hubiera acordado de muchas cosas. Al lado del titulo del posts esta indicado cuando fue esxcrito cada uno de los post.

Here in NZ I haven’t had so much opportunities to connect to internet, because was quite expensive, and I’ve been writing the posts on my hard disk with the same frequency as I used to do, every week. Now I’m going to hung up all the posts together. I prefer to do it in this way because after some weeks I wouldn’t have forgotten a lot of things. Near the title is indicated when the posts was written.

Hong Kong es un puntazo!

Estamos en Auckland, Nueva Zelanda, desde el jueves por la tarde. Un vuelo de 11 horas y unos cuantos controles en el aeropuerto despuésllegamos al hostal rotos. Ya estamos en Oceanía!
We’re right now in Auckland, New Zealand, since Thursday afternoon. A flight of 11 hours, some controls in the airport, and finally we arrived to the hostel really destroyed. But we’re in Oceania!
Hong Kong ha estado de puta madre. Es una ciudad de 7 millones que parece una colmena, porque aunque tiene en teoría un territorio grande solo se puede construir en un 25℅ del mismo. Eso hace que este lleno de rascacielos. Para que es hagáis una idea, nosotros dormíamos en el piso de una amiga de Clemy, en una planta 18, el edificio tenia 28 plantas, y no era de los mas altos.
Hong Kong was really great. It’s a city of 7 million people that looks a like a hive, because despite having a big territory it’s only possible to build in the 25℅ of it. This is why is crowded of skyscrapers. For example, we were sleeping in the flat of a friend of Clemy, in a 18th floor, the building had 28 floors, and it wasn’t one of the highest.
Precisamente por el espacio, las vías de circulación son como scalextric a varios niveles, tienen varios túneles que comunican el territorio continental de Hong Kong con las islas que forman parte de la ciudad, por debajo del mar, una red de metro rápida, muy bien indicada y climatizada y las salidas de la misma dan a pasos a nivel o a túneles que dan al lugar que quieres ir, atravesando incluso centros comerciales. En la parte central, casi no es necesario ni pisar la calle. Hay una estación de metro en el centro, que si vas a la salida mas lejana tardas 25 minutos en cruzar los túneles para llegar!
Because of the space, the roads and main highways inside of the city look a like a roller coaster, there are some tunnels that communicate the continental territory with the islands that are part of the city, tunnels that are down of the sea. The city has a really good metro net, with good indications and air conditioning and the exits of every station go direct to elevated corridors or tunnels that bring people directly to the place they want to arrive, even crossing malls. At the central part, almost it’s not necessaryto walk at the street. There is a metro sstation, that for arriving to the farest exit you need 25 minutes to cross the tunnelsto arrive!
Eso si, en tena de vivienda es uuna ciudad cara de cojones. Por lo que nos dijeron, un piso normal de unos 50 metros cuadrados, que es la media por allí, de alquiler son entre 1800 y 2000 euros al mes, y de compra unos 600.000 euros. Comer y el resto de cosas es incluso un poco mas barato que en España.
On the other hand, flats there are quite expensive. People told us that for a normal flat of 50 square meters, the average in there, therent is between 1800 and 2000 euros mmonth, and buy it could be around 600.000 euros. Et nd the rest of the things is even a little bit cheaper than Spain.
Otra cosa curiosa es la situación administrativa de la ciudad y la gente. En teoría desde 1997 pertenece a China después del dominio británico, pero es una región administrativa especial, con moneda diferente, pasaporte diferente, con el que es mas fácil ir a todas partes para ellos comparado con el pasaporte chino, siendo extranjero no necesitas visa china para entrar y esta casi todo en ingles y chino. La gente tampoco es igual que en China, aunque teóricamente son chinos y hablan chino, están occidentalizados, tanto en el vestir como en las maneras, muchos hablan ingles, no gritan, no escupen, no se juegan compulsivamente el dinero en cualquier juego de azar y hasta siguen las normas de tráfico. Es una mezcla rara pero mola.
Another curious thing is the administrative situation of the city and the people. Since 1997 Hong Kong belongs to China after the british government, but it’s a special administrative region, with different money, different passport, thanks that it’s easier for themto ttravel comparing with the Chinese passport, and foreigners don’t need Chinese visa to enter and almost all the street signals are in English and Chinese. People is not same type as in China. In theory they’re Chinese and they speak Chinese, but they have a western way of life for dressing and behaviour, a lot of them speak English, they don’t shout, don’t spit, don’t bet the money in games and even follow the traffic rules. It’s an strange mix but I like it.
Tienen hasta un museo de Bruce Lee, un paseo de las estrellas de cine al estilo Hollywood, versión taleguera, y cada da hacen un espectáculo de luces y musica con las luces de los rascacielos. No es nada del otro jueves, pero no se ve en otra parte creo.
They have a Bruce Lee museum, a star avenue Hollywood style, really small version, and every day they make a light nd sound show with the lights of some of the skyscrapers. It’s not spectacular, but I think it’s not possible to see it in other place.
A mi por lo menos Hong Kong me a encantado. No se si seria ideal para vivir, pero para visitarlo unos días me pareció espectacular.
I loved Hong Kong. I’m not sure that I would like to live there, but I think it’s spectacular to visit it some days.

Asia…what an adventure!

Hi everybody!

my turn to write a blog after such a long time…and then the final blog of our adventures in Asia! This is our last day in Hong Kong and we really loved this place. It started good with the plane of Hong Kong airlines which was on time and the seats had enormous legspace (ideal for David after three months being cramped in the local busses in South East Asia). And then the efficiency at the airport of Hong Kong: amazing! We were blown away, how can this be the same continent? We were lucky to stay at the apartment of Cherie (a Lehigh friend) for three days on Hong Kong island, so we took a cab and could already rest our feet again. Lovely!

Het is mijn beurt om nog eens op de blog te schrijven…om een of andere reden duurt het altijd een beetje langer voor mij om te schrijven 🙂 Ik heb dan nog eens geluk om de laatste blog te schrijven in Azie! Dit is onze laatste dag in Hong Kong en eerlijk gezegd, we zitten hier graag! Het begon al goed met het vliegtuig van Hong Kong airlines dat op tijd was en waar de zitjes elk een zee van beenruimte hadden…wat een verademing voor David na drie maanden bijna in foetushouding te moeten zitten in elke slaapbus of lokale bus. We waren ook een beetje overdonderd door de efficientie op de luchthaven van Hong Kong: migratie ging vlotjes en onze rugzakken waren al afgeleverd! Hoe kan dit in godsnaam hetzelfde continent zijn? We hebben geluk gehad dat we in het appartement van Cherie (nog van Lehigh) konden blijven terwijl zij op zakenreis was. Heerlijk!

We really walked our feet off during three days but enjoyed every minute of it. Somehow it does remind me of New York but then in big 🙂 The metrosystem are very well organized and even without a guide it was easy to find your way in the city thanks to all the arrows everywhere. Even I started to find my way… Well, Brussels could take some tips from this city to become more efficient 🙂 David even took pictures of the cathenaries of the metro! Don’t let me start about the amount of skyscrapers here, it is like a jungle! The first day David and I were like these typical tourists who are staring all the time up to see the buildings 🙂

We hebben echt wel de zolen van onze schoenen afgelopen de laatste drie dagen maar het was echt genieten. In zekere zin doet het me wel denken aan New York maar dan in het groot 🙂 Het metrosysteem is ongelofelijk georganiseerd en zelfs zonder gids is het heel gemakkelijk om je weg terug te vinden in de stad dankzij de vele wegwijzers. Zelfs ik begon op de duur mijn weg terug te vinden..en dat wil al veel zeggen! Laat ons zeggen dat Brussel nog een beetje kan bijleren van Hong Kong…:) David heeft zelfs foto’s zitten nemen van de ‘cathenaries’! (weet het woord eventjes niet in het nederlands).  En dan heb ik het nog niet gehad over al die torenhoge gebouwen, het leek wel een jungle! De eerste dag liepen David en ik echt als toeristen heel de tijd naar boven te staren…

Hola a toda la peña

Os escribo desde Hanoi, la capital de Vietnam. Esta semana hemos estado en la bahía de Halong y en Hanoi.

Im writing you from Hanoi, Vietnam capital. This week we’ve been in Ha. Lng Bay and Hanoi.

La bahia de Halong nos ha encantado. Es una bahia llena de islotes al estilo peñon de Gibraltar, donde parece que ves la costa y de repente ves que son mas peñones. Parece que no se acaba nunca! Ademas, hay mucho silencio y hay como un poco de niebka a lo lejos, con lo que tiene un toque misterioso. No me extraña que sea una de las 7 maravillas naturales del mundo.

We loved Halong Bay. It is a bay plenty of little islands, like the rock of Gibraltar, where looks a like that you are  watching the coast and suddenly you realize that what you are watching are more rocks. It seems that has no end! There is a lot of silence and far away you are not able to see so much because of the mist, so gives to the area a misterious touch. It is not strange that is considered as one of the 7 natural wonders of te earth.

Hanoi es otra cosa. Mucho ruido y un trafico salvaje, peor aun que en cualquier otro sitio de Vietnam. Lo mas curioso me parecio el mausoleo de Ho Chi Minh. Este fue el politico que lidero a Vietnam en la guerra de independencia contra los franceses y a Vietnam del Norte en la guerra contra los americanos. Puedes ver su cuerpo en una urna, supongo que conservado en formol, 45 años después de su muerte. Había hasta gente llorando por el “padre de la patria”.

Hanoi is other thing. A lot of noise and wild traffic, much worst than the rest if Vietnam. The most curious thing to see was Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. He was the politician that leaded Vietnam in the independence war against french and north Vietnam in the war against Americans. We could see his body inside a glass estructure, 45 years after he died. Imagine that there were people crying after see it.

Vietnam me ha gustado mucho. Es un país con un montón de historia, cosas muy chulas de ver, y con muchos contrastes. Muy recomendable visitarlo. Aun así ya hay ganas de ir a Nueva Zelanda. En mi caso por las razones que puse en el anterior post y en el de Clemy porque está un poco harta del calor y la humedad.

I liked Vietnam. It’s a country with a lot of history, really nice things to see, and with a lot of contrasts. It is really advisable to visit it. But, we’re looking forward to go to New Zealand. In my case because of the reasons I explained in the previous post, and in the case of Clemy because she’s a little bit fed up of the hit weather and the humidity.

Empiezo a estar un poco cansado de Asia

OS escribo desde Hanoi, la capital de Vietnam, donde hemos llegado después de 16 largas horas de autocar. Solo estaremos hoy para dormirp porque mañana vamos unos ddías a la bahía de Halong, que dicen está muy bien.
I’m writing from Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, where we’ve arrived after 16 long hours in a bus. We’re going to be here only for sleeping, because tomorrow we’ll go some days to Halong Bay, that people say it’s really nice.
Esta semana estuvimos sobretodo en Hue, y nos ha encantado. Hue fue la capital imperial de Vietnam durante dos siglos, antes de la guerra de independencia. Hay una ciudad imperial interesante, con una muralla alrededor, lo malo son los palacios, que fueron bombardeados durante la guerra. Lástima, porque podría ser una Ciudad Prohibida de Pequin, aunque en pequeño y no tan espectacular. Lo que si que es espectacular son las tumbas de los emperadores, situadas en las afueras de Hue, y que son verdaderos palacios, con detalles cuidados, y con un entorno de lagos y naturaleza acojonante en alguna tumba.
This week we were in Hue almost all the time, y we loved it. Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam during two centuries, before of theIIndependence War. There’s a really interesting imperial city, surrounded by a wall, the negative point are the palaces, that were bombed during the was. What a pity, because could have been a Beijing Forbidden City, much smaller and less spectacular it’s true. The really spectacular thing are the tombs of the emperors, located around Hue, that are really palaces, with a lot of nice details, and surrounded some of them by lakes and nature.
Lo que no me gustó tanto fue la DMZ, o zona desmilitarizada, que era la franja que separó Vietnam del Norte y del Sur durante 15 años. Tiene alguna cosa que no está mal, como los túneles de Vinh Conh, o la antigua base americana de Khe Sanh, pero haces un montón de kilómetros y las explicaciones de los guías no fueron muy extensas, y eso que el tema daba para más. Si el padre de Clemy hubiera estadoa allí hubiera escupido a la guía en ojo, eso como poco.
What I didn’t like so much was the DMZ, or demilitarized zone, that was the peace of land that separated North Vietnam from South Vietnam during 15 years. It has some things are not bad, like Vinh Conh tunnels or the old American base Khe Sanh, but we should do a lot of kilometers and the explanation of the guides were really not extended, and there are a lot of things they could have explained. If Clemy`s father would have been there he would have spited at the eye of the guide, at least.
El título del post viene porque estoy un poco harto de los asiáticos en general. Son simpáticos, pero es una lucha constante contra las mentiras, tienes que negociar cada puto precio de cada puta cosa que compras, y son muy poco serios con los tratos. Se que tienen otra filosofía y otra manera de pensar, muy diferente a la manera de pensar occidental, pero es muy cansino encontrarte lo mismo día tras día. En fin, en menos de dos semanas estaremos en Nueva Zelanda, o sea que está casi hecho.
I put this title at the post because I’m a little bit fed up of the Asiatic people in general. They’re really nice, but it’s a constant fight against lies, we should negociate every damn prize of every damn thing we’re going to buy, and they’re not really serious with theddeals. I know they’ve got another philosophy and another way of thinking, really different of western one, but it’s exhausting to find every single day the same. No worries, we’re going to be in New Zealand in two weeks, so it’s done.
